Literacy
According to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) nearly 20% on the adults in the counties served by Family Services Center are functioning at the lowest basic literacy levels. Similar numbers are in poverty. The relationship between poverty and literacy is clear. NAAL also states that 70% of welfare recipients have lower level literacy skills. Significant improvements can be made in employment, earnings and self-sufficiency with improved literacy skills.
Family Services Center offers adult literacy tutoring to individuals who need to strengthen their literacy skills. The only requirement is a desire to learn. We are highly collaborative with the GED (General Education Development) program in that they get many students that test below the reading level required to enroll. We provide tutoring to improve their skills to a level that allows them to enroll in the GED program.
Tutoring for children is also available.
